Anna's Birthday!

Posted by: Maddy Thursday we celebrated Anna's 11th birthday!  We had a great night hanging out together and had some good tasting chicken for dinner! ( see previous post ) Anna is a great sister and its was great to celebrate with her on her special day!

Processing Day

Posted by: Maddy Yesterday we were busy processing 75 chickens! It was an all day event considering how long it took to set up the equipment, figuring out the different stations, and it was a pretty cool day. We have had lots of practice with other people's chickens but we never had to set things up before, so it took awhile this time. The hard work paid off and now we have 3 refrigerators full of chicken! It was a long family project.  Isn't Mom pretty?  Our setup in the poll barn We also got some cows this week as well...

Grandparent's Visit

Posted by: Maddy Last week our Grandparents came out for a few days to visit! It was great to see them and spend time with them! We were able to go to the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum with them, eat out, went to a auction, show them around where we live, gave them a tour of our farm and just spent quality grandparent time with them! It was great to have company for a little while! :)

Turkeys!

Posted by: Maddy We got 15 turkeys shipped to us this morning. We all thought they would be a little larger, but they are quite tiny. But they are only a few days old so I can't be surprised.  As I said earlier, we will be processing them a week before Christmas! Also, today it rained for the first time in weeks!!!! It was great! We really needed the moisture.

Chickens

Posted by: Maddy Our chickens have done a lot of growing in the past month. Its hard to believe that when we first got them they looked like this... Now those same chickens look like this... We will be processing them in 4 weeks! Our layers have started to lay a few eggs but not many yet. Been staying busy and trying to keep cool. It has been 100 degrees or more for 5 days in a row! Thank God for AC!

New Arrivals

Posted by: Maddy This afternoon we got some guinea keets. We are not sure which ones are male and which ones are female yet. They are so cute!!! We have them in the brooder, but in 2 weeks we will move them to a hen house that we have in our front yard. They are for bug control. I also hear that they are great watch dogs as well! The little ones are happy that they are somewhat of a 'pet' and we won't be processing any of them!  So its safe to get attached to them.  My sisters have also been doing a lot of swimming since the weather has been really hot ( you can tell from the pictures that we haven't cleaned the pool for awhile ). Our meat chickens are getting so big! Compared to the laying hens, the meat chickens are pretty lazy. Also a personal note from me, they are quite ugly too! We also have turkeys coming in 2 weeks as well! They will be old enough to process a week before Christmas! So I guess we will all be out there in the cold getting turkeys ready f...
