Turkey Processing

Posted by: Maddy Mom and Dad made a last minute decision last Monday to process the turkeys on the 16th because they were starting to get pretty aggressive with each other. So on Friday morning we found ourselves  out side processing! Friday got up into the 50's! So we had warm weather for processing! The plan was to start around 5 am, and have all the killing done before the sun came up. That way the turkeys are more calm. The only one who actually woke up on time for that was Dad and Ashley. The rest of us slept in a little later. So around 8, we were all ready to get started. We only had 12 turkeys to do, so we thought this won't be so bad that we started late. But we kept checking the temperature on the scalder and it would just not get up to the right temperature that it needed to. We actually ended up waiting another 2 hours to see if it would rise, but it didn't. Later we found the it was the thermometer that wasn't working! When we finally did get started,...

We Have a Name, a Logo, and a Website!

Posted by: Maddy I must say, coming up with a name for the farm wasn't an easy thing to do. My parents started thinking of names for the farm before we had our house on the market. Then this past year, we have been thinking harder because we needed one to start selling our products. So one night after dinner Dad had each of us take a piece of paper and a pen and start writing down ideas. Then after about 30 minutes, we started reading aloud our ideas and voting which one we all liked. Our first name that we really liked was Summit Farms. It was simple and yet totally described what we do on the farm. So that's what we went with until we went to get an LLC. We found that someone else in Missouri already had that name. I was really bummed about that. That name just sounded so professional to me. So after awhile of thinking of some more and looking up to see if our other ideas where taken, we finally found one that wasn't taken. So our farm is officially named Peak View Fa...

Ice Skating......Sorta

Posted by: Maddy Unfreezing water for all of the animals might not be what we would call fun, but when our pond (that does hold water now, thanks to our pigs!) froze, we found it to be quite fun! Yesterday, the little ones went out and played on the ice and this morning Ashley, Anna, and I went out to play on it (morning is the best time to do it)! We weren't really ice skating. We wore our muck boots. It was cool just the same. Now we have found something that we like about January here! You really do have to dress like you are going skiing just to go outside this time of year!  Anna and Ashley Anna and I Just chilling out!

Reviewing the Year

Posted by: Maddy I must say, this year was probably one of the most interesting years of my life. The year started out for me in Colorado and ended in Missouri! In summer of 2013 my family made their first trip out here to Missouri to look at property and meet with people who were farming the way my Dad wanted to. Then in the fall and winter of that year they made some more trips out here to look at property. My Dad wanted to have our house sold and be in Missouri by the end of November of 2013. But that didn't happen. Secretly, I was happy about that. The whole time this was going on, I was against moving. As the oldest in my family, I don't like change. I had grown up in Arvada my whole life, so to move at the age 14 was not something I wanted to do. This year started with our house on the market and just waiting to be able to move. This was not a good start to the year as far as I was concerned. I knew that any day we could get an offer on our house and then we would h...
