Reviewing the Year

Posted by: Maddy I must say, this year was probably one of the most interesting years of my life. The year started out for me in Colorado and ended in Missouri! In summer of 2013 my family made their first trip out here to Missouri to look at property and meet with people who were farming the way my Dad wanted to. Then in the fall and winter of that year they made some more trips out here to look at property. My Dad wanted to have our house sold and be in Missouri by the end of November of 2013. But that didn't happen. Secretly, I was happy about that. The whole time this was going on, I was against moving. As the oldest in my family, I don't like change. I had grown up in Arvada my whole life, so to move at the age 14 was not something I wanted to do. This year started with our house on the market and just waiting to be able to move. This was not a good start to the year as far as I was concerned. I knew that any day we could get an offer on our house and then we would h

Merry Christmas!

Posted by: Maddy Merry Christmas from the Coulters! This is our first Christmas out here in Missouri! It's been different already and I will post more about it next week. Picture taken on our front porch.

Off to the Butcher

Posted by: Maddy We first got sheep in July. We have cared for them enough that they look a lot better then when we got them. This morning we said good bye to all of the rams. Anna and I were the happiest to see them go since she and I where the ones that took care of them everyday. :) We sent 4 of them off to be processed in October, because they were limping and once they start limping there is no way to fix it (we tried and it didn't work). I am really amazed at how much meat you can get off of a sheep for being small animals. They are supposed to be 80 pounds when they are ready to be processed (I guess that's not really that small). The 4 we got rid of back in October weren't to 80 pounds yet, and we got quite a lot of meat out of them. We took the last 6 rams in today. All we have left are 4 ewes  (female sheep). And 2 of them are pregnant (by accident)! Hopefully the Dad wasn't related. That's why we didn't keep our rams for breeding. We aren't

My Newest Pet!

Posted by: Maddy I decided that it would be cool to see if I could get my parakeets to mate and have babies! I have a male and a female so all I had to do was put a nesting box in their cage to encourage them to mate. Unfortunately 4 out of 5 died but the one that did live is now 10 weeks old! I named him Sven :) Parakeets are the only animals we have that are allowed in the house. He is such a cute little guy! Then his mom started laying some more eggs but they all died or just didn't hatch. So I took the nest out so they can have a break. They are horrible parents. So now I have a cute little family of parakeets!  Sven A cute little family! The blue and white one to the left is Toby, the middle one is Abby and the one to the far right is Sven.
